Chapter Six

Kellen ran through the forest in wolf form, letting out angry howls of frustration every few minutes. He knew it wasn’t smart for any of the shifter competitors like himself to run through the forests near Gilt Hollow in animal form, but right now he couldn’t bring himself to care. The anger coursing through his veins was too much for his human form to handle, and so he’d let his wolf out to play.

He wasn’t sure whom he was angrier at: himself or Viv. All he knew for sure was that he had fucked up royally. He had insulted Viv in every way possible, and he’d guilt tripped her for not wanting to join the resistance. One of the first rules of the resistance was that no shifter should be pressured to join against their will. The resistance crew lived in constant danger of losing their lives, and it wasn’t fair to force anyone into that.

And yet, Kellen had been so disappointed in Viv’s reaction that he’d tried to force her anyway. All he’d done was push her away. He should have known. Viv had never been the kind of person who appreciated being told what to do. And even though he thought she was overestimating the dangers of being a messenger at the shifter market, she did have a point. In the unlikely event that someone from Gilt Hollow did realize what was going on, she’d lose her market booth and probably her life. And her parents might not be spared either.

Kellen thought the risks were small enough to be worth taking, and he’d been looking forward to working with Viv. It would have given him an easy excuse to see her on a regular basis, and they could have slowly explored their feelings for each other. Life would have been perfect.

I should have known better. Life for a shifter is never perfect.

He also should have known enough to just come out and tell her that he cared for her, instead of trying to act like he was only talking to her because they needed a messenger. If he’d manned up from the start and told her that he thought they should try to make things work despite the distance between them, perhaps the whole conversation might have gone a little better.

Too late now. They’d both said things that weren’t so nice, but he much more than she. And he couldn’t help but think that any chance he’d ever had at winning her heart had just been lost, completely and hopelessly.

Kellen howled again and ran faster. His wolf legs were burning, but he didn’t mind the pain. It gave him something to think about other than Viv. He told himself that she was better off without him anyway. Odds were good that they were not lifemates. Why would destiny set her up with someone who lived across the river and couldn’t truly be there for her at all times? Her lifemate was probably some guy in Bear Hollow,
